To celebrate POW!WOW! The Long Beach Convention & Visitors Bureau Presents: Party at The Cove from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Thursday, July 20, at The Cove (300 E. Ocean Blvd.). Music, food and more will be on hand during the event.

Another POW! WOW! highlight is from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, July 22, at The Varden (335 Pacific Ave.), with Olukai Presents: Art Battle, hosted by Mike Giant. Live art, DJs and refreshments will be available at the all-ages event.

Here’s another great story by Emily Thornton at the Grunion Gazette.

“People may have noticed more painted walls citywide in the past couple of weeks. That’s because POWing and WOWing will come to Long Beach for the third annual time.

POW! WOW! Long Beach, running Sunday, July 16, to Saturday, July 22, throughout the city, features live mural paintings, art exhibitions, discussions and more.

It’s grown.

“Everything we do is for the betterment of the community, and over the last three years we have had nothing but positive support,” director Dani Concepcion and project manager Tokotah Ashcraft said in an email. “We have had so much support from the city, businesses, and locals and it gets stronger every year.”

POW! WOW! founder Jasper Wong said he brought the celebration to Long Beach and elsewhere in 2015, after introducing it to his native Hawaii in 2011. His idea originated, he said, from living in Hong Kong, where similar events occurred. Additionally, POW! is the impact that art has on a person and WOW! is the reaction that art gets from a viewer, according to Wong.

“POW! WOW! is important because it provides artists a platform on a large scale while at the same time beautifying the city with amazing art,” Ashcraft and Conception said.

This year, 21 globally-renowned muralists will create, with Mike Giant, Kevin Lyons, Tatiana, Suarez, Niels Shoe Meulman, Nosego, TRAV MSK, and Adele Renault among them. Those representing Long Beach include Bodeck Hernandez, The Draculas, Nate Frizzell, Ryan Milner and others. The city commissioned Yoskay Yarnamato to add his art to the the future Civic Center’s temporary walls.

Getting things started is a POW! WOW! Pop-Up Shop Grand Opening from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, July 16, at MADE by Millworks (240 Pine Ave.). The event features sounds from POW! WOW! School of Music, food, drinks, and exclusive POW! WOW! goods on sale throughout the week.

“We are very excited to partner with MADE by Millworks this year for our Pop-Up shop,” Concepcion and Ashkraft said. “You can purchase POW! WOW! Long Beach goods all week. Stay tuned to our website for more happenings for the week.”
