Pirates invade Shoreline Park in Long Beach

ARRRGH! There be pirate warnings flying above Long Beach harbor. Keep a weather eye for these scoundrels who have been pillaging the West Coast for years.

The pirates seem to arrive every year on the first weekend in July. But this year, after sacking the Belmont Veterans Memorial Pier, their cannons will be aimed at Shoreline Park and its Lighthouse. Oh woo is me!

Alfredo’s Beach Club, the city’s beach concessionaire, puts on the two-day festival, July 1-2. Come out Saturday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.Event organizers say Shoreline Park offers more space for pirate camps, pirate training, a kids’s zone and taverns.  Nothing like a daily ration of rum!

In addition, there will be a complete mermaid village with up to 50 mermaids. Now there’s a tail to tell. What a wonder, a whole mermaid village!

There will even be a live production of “Treasure Island”, and live musical entertainment on two stages. Then watch the belly and fire dancers. Better rehearse your sea chanties!

Parking in Belmont was impossible, so the new venue will offer more parking, if you count garages at both the Aquarium of the Pacific and the Pike Outlets.

This year, a pirate squadron of three tall ships will take turns bombarding the shore. And cast members from the Pirates of the Caribbean movie series will be hosted by Captain Morgan and the Outlaw Pirates.

Of course, this family event is free and you can buy food, drink and games. If you want to join these scallywags, there will be a pirates’ village, with vendors selling everything pirate.

Shoreline Village, across Rainbow Harbor from the park, also is partnering with the event this year. There are VIP packages available, including food, drink and a close look at the pirate action. Remember to keep your powder dry!
